Reimagining Freshney Place: A New Heart for Grimsby

Freshney Place

Grimsby

ExA developed the landscape design for Freshney Place West in Grimsby town centre. Following a successful Future Hight Street Funds application, North East Lincolnshire Council  have been progressing development proposals for Freshney Place West, transforming the existing market hall and part of the shopping centre into a new leisure destination with food market and cinema fronting a new public square.

Working with Leslie Jones Architects, ExA developed the design of the public square, creating a space that feels vibrant and active, supporting the day- and night-time economy. Active frontage lines both sides of the square and a new sculptural centrepiece draws people into the space. Trees and planting soften the public realm with a palette selected to suit the maritime climate.

Spatial activation studies were workshopped as part of the design process to understand the possibilities for events and functions to take place in the square. A stepped level change within the buildings provides the opportunity to split the square into two sub-spaces which can be curated independently. The upper-level space is designed to maximise flexibility whilst the lower space is more intimate and accommodates spill-out to the market and cinema.
