Today Hannah and Mark from our team here at Exterior Architecture (ExA) went to South Thames College in Wandsworth to attend a Nine Elms on the Southbank Careers Expo. They were able to talk to students between the ages of 14-18, as well as some mature students, about the landscape architecture profession and what we do at ExA.
25 Nine Elms on the Southbank employers were present at the fair, with 200 pupils from 7 local schools invited to attend. Mark and Hannah found the students to be engaging and excited, as many had interesting questions about what landscape architect’s do and how the landscape benefits the built environment. Mark and Hannah discussed issues ranging from climate change to housing to flooding and design in public space and play considerations with the students. They all responded with enthusiasm, particularly those who had spotted the skatepark design in our presentation!
Hannah & Mark were asked about the skills needed to become a professional as well as the future for the industry, which shows that the students were switched on and interested in their future careers.
Hannah and Mark were also able to talk to Councillor McDermott from London Borough of Wandsworth as well as some lecturers from the college. Everyone seemed genuinely interested in what we do and the services we are able to provide, especially the students who took a packet of wildflower seeds from the Landscape Institute (LI) home to plant themselves! Hannah and Mark took some LI literature, post cards and the packets of seeds to spread the ‘landscape word'.
Here at ExA we are passionate and committed to furthering the aims of landscape architecture, and promoting our discipline. Being able to talk to students is just one way in which we try to endorse our profession, and showcase our skills.
Here’s to the future of landscape!
