Landscape considerations led to an illustrative masterplan that paid careful attention to the capacity for 150 housing units on a green field site. One of the fundamental aspects of the landscape-led approach was the location of the proposed housing in the northern part of the site where it would be less visible on account of its relatively low elevation and the enclosure provided by nearby mature tree growth. Integral to the development was the provision of an area of Suitable Alternative Natural Green Space (SANGS) to help mitigate against the effect of residential development on the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area. Landscape character, visual amenity, arboriculture, countryside conservation and settlement integration were vital to the success of this scheme. In association with SCARP Landscape Architecture Ltd, EA was appointed by Welbeck Strategic Land LLP to provide LVIA and landscape design inputs to an outline planning application.
