Design Approach
Exterior Architecture is dedicated to the achievement of strong, legible, innovative landscape design. To this end we take a technically thorough approach to our work and are rigorous about its implementation. The practice has a highly committed and enthusiastic team of young landscape architects led by Sam Martin, with keen interests in the environment, sustainable landscape solutions, artistic engagement, garden history and contemporary design. Individuals in the Exterior Architecture team have a strong track record in public realm, estate landscape, major garden projects and parks.
EA understand the technical requirements of detailed design and documentation, and the professional practice of project procurement, contractor engagement and construction supervision. As a team we recognise the business, science and art in landscape design and relish challenge this brings. We also enjoy engaging with other experts; engineers, architects, ecologists and artists to best serve our clients and the landscape.
Our design approach involves the following:
- Developing and maintaining good working relationships with our clients and professional colleagues. Key to this process is establishing a clear and comprehensive brief with the client from the outset.
- Respect and understanding for the context, history and heritage of an existing landscape, whilst retaining a clear eye for its design potential.
- The thorough analysis of a landscape’s visual and physical strengths and weaknesses.
- Delivering technically competent solutions that are appropriate for a site and its particular micro-climate and ground conditions. Being aware of the technical requirements and current standards those solutions need to meet.
- Making appropriate design choices with plant species and materials that reinforce the identity of a landscape and help to build a sense of place.
- Rigorously managing procurement, exploring options that offer good value.
- Recognition of the importance of ongoing landscape maintenance and management beyond the construction period.
