SENSE OF ARRIVAL, SENSE OF PLACE
Exterior Architecture in association with Scarp, was appointed by Dignity PLC to provide LVIA and landscape design services to this detailed planning application. The site, located to the south of the A2 viaduct, was once occupied by Mabledon Hospital. It is now a local nature reserve with one of Kent’s best Adder populations though the remains of the hospital buildings and landscape areas can still be seen ghosted in the landscape surface. The Crematorium is connected to Derby Road via a tree lined avenue. This processional drive aims to engage and enhance visitors’ emotions and give a sense of grandeur on entering the site. Once at the Crematorium parking area visitors walk on bridges over shallow water features to an extended building canopy. Once visitors are in the Chapel a carefully constructed view to a sculptural feature, located at the end of a gently rising landform, raise the eye to the heavens and form a key focus from the Chapel.
