Preserving and enhancing the existing
natural sustainable assets.

Castlegate SMP

Wakefield

A vision and masterplan to support the allocation of land at Castlegate, working closely with Marshall CDP’s in-house architectural team (BMS Ltd) ExA created a landscape-led proposal for the 32ha site.

Creating connections is a key feature of the proposals, which retains and enhances existing pedestrian routes through and around the site, connecting to neighbouring areas. A sustainable transport hub is at the heart of the scheme.

The health and social cohesion of the future users are considered in the proposals and lead to the development of a landscape ribbon running through the centre of the site, connecting activity zones with areas rich in biodiversity.

The preservation and enhancement of the existing natural assets on site also helped to shape the proposals with hedgerows retained and expanded, and the existing beck cleared and opened up as a feature of the site, whilst also playing a part in the sustainable drainage strategy.
